New Director of Teagasc Appointed
The Teagasc Authority has appointed Professor Gerry Boyle as the new Director of Teagasc; subject to contract. The Authority approved the appointment, with the consent of the Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan TD, at its meeting in Oak Park receantly.
CORK TRANSITION STUDENTS TO PILOT CANCER EDUCATION PROGRAMME
A new education programme for Transition Year students which aims to improve understanding of the genetics and molecular biology of cancer was launched yesterday in Douglas Community School, Cork. The Cancer Biology programme runs over approximately 10 lessons and will be taught by specially trained teachers
Prof. John Horgan confirmed as Ireland’s first Press Ombud
The newly-established Press Council of Ireland has announced that Professor John Horgan, a prominent author and academic whose background is in journalism and politics, has been appointed as Ireland’s inaugural Press Ombudsman.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Press Council, Professor Thomas Mitchell, who said that Professor Horgan’s appointment marked “the beginning of a new era for Irish media and hopefully a very positive new relationship between the press and the public.
“The appointment of a Press Ombudsman means that Ireland finally has a complaints mechanism that is free, easy to use, totally independent and available to every citizen,” said Professor Mitchell. “Anyone who feels aggrieved by a newspaper article or photograph can avail of this mechanism without having to risk spending a fortune by going to court. This is an essential service in any democratic society.”
Neville announces World Conference on Suicide in Killarney

Association of Suicidology, host of the International Association of
Suicide Prevention (IASP) World Conference which will take place in
Killarney between August 27th and September 1st.
